MOUNT EFFORT -- A Saylorsburg woman was killed when she was thrown from a car in a one-vehicle accident in Chestnuthill Township Thursday evening.
State police at Fern Ridge identified the dead woman as Carolyn Baines, 37.
The driver of the car, William J. Counterman, of Saylorsburg, was also hurt. He was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital with moderate injuries, police said.
The accident happened at about 7:05 p.m.
Counterman was driving a red 1989 Toyota Corolla north on Sugar Hollow Road near the intersection of State Road when the car ran off the road and struck a tree.
The passenger's side of the vehicle bore the brunt of the impact, witnesses said.
Police said the car was traveling about 50 mph when it ran off the road.
Baines, who was riding in the front passenger seat, was ejected from the car and thrown onto the road.
Emergency medical personnel treated her at the scene for a serious head injury. She was flown to St. Luke's Hospital near Bethlehem, where she was pronounced dead.
Counterman was conscious and talking after the accident, witnesses said.
State police at Fern Ridge and West End Fire Company responded, assisted by several other emergency response teams.
Charges may be filed once the investigation is complete, and alcohol might have played a role in the accident, police said.
