One dead, one severely injured in West End crash

BRODHEADSVILLE -- A Saylorsburg man died and two others were injured after a crash on Route 209 near Brodheadsville early Thursday morning, just a half mile from where Pleasant Valley High School sophomore Jessica Dettrey died in a crash in September.

Police said that Matthew John Solderitch, 27, was driving south on Route 209 when, in front of the Agway, he lost control of his car and crossed the double yellow line and hit a Ford pickup head-on.

The truck, driven by 58-year-old Jerry D. Eckhart of Palmerton, rolled over onto its roof and stopped in the northbound lane. Solderitch's car then hit a Dodge pickup truck driven by 47-year-old Paul Smith of Effort which was travelling north on Route 209 behind Eckhart.

Solderitch was pronounced dead at the scene by Monroe County Coroner Dave Thomas. Eckhart was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown with a severe hip injury. Smith had a minor arm injury and did not require treatment. Police said that Smith was wearing a seatbelt; Solderitch and Eckhart were not.
